The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
