Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
