Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
